For just the second time in 140 years of record keeping, the temperature failed to reach 90 in either June or July.

The daily average last month was at or below normal every day but two. The temperature broke 80 on 16 days in New York — one more day than in Fairbanks, Alaska."

"The high was 86 on July 17. "

(Granted, Fairbanks, Alaska had a month of record high temperatures. The highest reading was 91 on July 8. Still, reminds me of the time that Austin was hotter than Death Valley.)

That can't be the only reason – fascination with understanding the physical world and an emotional need to discover new things has to enter into it too. But high-school and college science means taking courses, and doing well in courses means getting the right answers on tests. If you know those answers, you do well and get to feel smart.

A Ph.D., in which you have to do a research project, is a whole different thing. For me, it was a daunting task. How could I possibly frame the questions that would lead to significant discoveries; design and interpret an experiment so that the conclusions were absolutely convincing; foresee difficulties and see ways around them, or, failing that, solve them when they occurred? My Ph.D. project was somewhat interdisciplinary and, for a while, whenever I ran into a problem, I pestered the faculty in my department who were experts in the various disciplines that I needed. I remember the day when Henry Taube (who won the Nobel Prize two years later) told me he didn't know how to solve the problem I was having in his area. I was a third-year graduate student and I figured that Taube knew about 1000 times more than I did (conservative estimate). If he didn't have the answer, nobody did.

That's when it hit me: nobody did. That's why it was a research problem. And being my research problem, it was up to me to solve. Once I faced that fact, I solved the problem in a couple of days. (It wasn't really very hard; I just had to try a few things.) The crucial lesson was that the scope of things I didn't know wasn't merely vast; it was, for all practical purposes, infinite. That realization, instead of being discouraging, was liberating. If our ignorance is infinite, the only possible course of action is to muddle through as best we can."

If you haven’t, then please take a minute to scan this message. You’re receiving this message because someone trusts you to read it with an open mind. Smile! :)

Vitals
======

What: A no-limits sex-positive gender and sexuality unconference.
Why: To inspire a creative, interactive and open environment where everyone feels comfortable talking, learning, and being inspired by all kinds of sexuality.
When: March 8, 2009
Where: NYC (We’re still looking for a venue! Can you help? See ‘Get Involved,’ below!)
Who: Everyone
How much: Free (as in beer as well as freedom)

Details
=======

KinkForAll is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people of the kink, queer, sex-positive and related communities to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, presentations, and interaction from all participants. (It is inspired by the BarCamp community.)

ANYONE WITH SOMETHING TO CONTRIBUTE OR WITH THE DESIRE TO LEARN IS WELCOME AND INVITED TO JOIN. When you attend, be prepared to share with others. When you leave, be prepared to share it with the world.

A KinkForAll is a special kind of gathering because there are no spectators, only participants. Attendees must give a talk or a presentation, help with one, or otherwise volunteer/contribute in some way to support the event. This is called sharing and we like it. All presentations are scheduled the day they happen—there are no pre-scheduled presentations or keynote addresses. The people present at the event will select the presentations they want to see.

Anyone can present, on any topic related to sexuality. You do not necessarily have to teach a new skill or idea. You might share an experience, review a product, or read a poem. The goal is to start a discussion, make connections, and exchange knowledge. Presentations promoting specific commercial products or companies are discouraged.

Learn more about what to expect at
http://kinkforall.pbwiki.com/WhatToExpect

Learn more about the event guidelines at
http://kinkforall.pbwiki.com/TheRulesOfKinkForAll

Get Involved
============

We need your help in spreading the word.
I find the reporting of this finding to be hilarious. The study found that 12% of women surveyed were virgins, and that “obese” women were more likely to have ever had sex. However, (cut and pasted from my thesis) there was ‘no difference in “sexual orientation, frequency of sexual intercourse, number of current partners…age at first intercourse, number of lifetime male partners, and the number of male partners in the last 12 months” by BMI category (Kaneshiro et al. 2008:589). ”

Yet, apparently, the “Fat women are having sex” is so sensational that they dont talk about the rest of it.

I was tagged by Jay :-) And, since he wanted his readers to see this, this is a public post :-)

1. I am self centered and self focused.
2. I think capitalism is the solution to a great many problems. I think the free market can solve many problems. As an example: "green" power will not become widely used until the cost is beneficial. I think research money is important, and it will be the rich that will subsidize the cost during that phase, but it will not hit wide distribution until the price becomes more affordable than traditional methods.
3. I believe stigma reduction should come from the society. Which is why I am so passionate about stigmatized individuals. My thesis is about how stigma management is an individual thing, but it shouldnt be. The way to change the stigma about fat people is not to change the fat people, but to change how society views fat people. The way to change the stigma surrounding herpes and other STIs is to change how "society" views STIs and the individuals who have STIs.
4. Im scared to work. The last time I was working, I was going to school Tuesday and Thursdays, and working overnights Friday thru Sunday. I also had an emotional breakdown and ended up in an outpatient psychiatric hospital. I think that there was something biologically based about my mental issues, but that the stress and irregular sleep schedule tipped it at the point that it did. Thus, Im worried about a 9-5 stressful job. Which is probably why I am going back for a 2nd masters degree :-) With social work, I hope I can get a flexible schedule and not deal with it.
5. Even with my being scared of work, I LOVE graduate school. Okay, sure, I say that now, with me within two months of finishing. Graduate school has been one of the hardest things that I have done in my life. It was stressful, but I am glad that I did it. Im still unsure about the whole PhD, though.
6. I am not a christian. I am not a singularly identifiable religion. If I have to narrow it down, it goes to "deist." I believe that some entity thats easily identifiable as "god" created the universe, and its our responsibility to learn its secrets. However, I to think there are things that science has not figured out yet, which some may label as "miracles" or "faith." I chalk those up as "the universe is fucking with me."
7. That said, I love end of the world prophecies. There is a small part of me that thinks I would have time to convert if I *needed* to do so. Of course, if "God" really thinks that faith is better than proof, then im screwed either way.

I dont tag, but drop me a note if you do this :-)

I am in heaven. Steak heaven. I think I just had the best steak of my life.

I had a flat iron steak from Johnny Carinos. A Flat Iron Steak is actually a new steak invention, made from a previously thought untender cut of meat.

It was AWESOME! It was juicy and tender and had flavor. It had the flavor of a sirloin (sirloin is about the only steak I typically get, because I dont like the fattiness of other steaks), and the tenderness of a filet Mignon. I ordered it medium rare, it came out more towards the rare side, but it was still awesome!

And still yummy when cold! Woohoo!

I really need to learn how to cook my own steaks. When I buy my place next year, I will probably install a very powerful range hood so I can do steaks and grilling type stuff without smoke alarm worry. :-)

On another food related note, Haagen Daas vanilla ice cream does not make good big red floats. Blue bell makes the best vanilla for floats. :-)

Edit: The steak was not as good the next day. I think it was kinda undercooked, next time, i'll ask for it medium, and let it sit for a few minutes before digging into it. Still the best steak ive ever had hot :-) But, the tenderloin (filet mignon) was still tender the next day, this one was not.

So, we went to Publix in Tallahassee today. I checked the "ethnic foods" isle, and it looks like there is enough mexican food stuff to keep me happy. I didnt check for BBQ sauce.

However, it kinda saddens me that it looked almost exactly like HEB or WalMart or SuperTarget grocery section. Do all supermarkets over the US look the same? The markets in Mexico seemed a lot different than the ones here, both in layout and types of groceries offered.

In your travels, how do the grocery stores look?
